Juice Cleanse Recipes (And My Experience!)

In this post, I will be sharing with you a little bit about what a juice cleanse is, my experience in doing a 3 day cleanse, and 6 juice cleanse recipes and detailed guide to how to create your own juice cleanse! So let’s  get to it!

 

What Is a Juice Cleanse and Why Do One?

A juice cleanse is basically a period of time where you will only consume raw, fresh pressed juice. It has incredible benefits such as clear skin, better digestion, increased energy, hormonal balance, and more! By consuming just juice, you will be giving your body all of the essential nutrients it needs while giving your digestive pathway a much needed break. This allows your body to put its energy into healing other parts of your body that may have been neglected in the past.

Juice has no fiber in it (the fiber is extracted out of the fresh fruits and vegetables through the juicer in the form of pulp). This allows for direct absorption of the nutrients that you drink from the juice. Did you know that up to 40-80% of your body’s energy goes into digestion each day? By eliminating the fiber from your food, you remove the need for your body to exert this extra energy. All of the energy you consume through the juice supports the body in healing everywhere else!

In addition to healing you will be quickly detoxifying the body. This can produce negative detox symptoms, which I will discuss later on in the post, but once they pass you will feel like you have been reborn! You’re probably wondering how this works right? What exactly is detox?

Detox simply means removal of the built up toxins in the body. We live in a world today that is severely toxic and harmful to our bodies and health. Processed foods, contaminated air, polluted environments, and toxic chemicals in products are all absorbed into the body and build up over time. These toxins can be stored in our cells, and it is difficult for our body to work fast enough or get enough nutrition in to remove all of these toxins.

When on a juice cleanse, most of the energy you are consuming can go to detoxifying and healing the body. Since you are taking in a large amount of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, the body can quickly get rid of free radicals floating around in the blood stream. Once the free radicals are removed, more and more can be pulled out of our cells and further eliminated from the body. By hydrating with tons of water, you will flush out these toxins quickly. In essence, a juice cleanse attempts to detoxify the body of all built up toxins.

 

How Much Juice Will I Be Consuming?

While doing a juice cleanse you are not starving your body. You are filling it up with tons of essential nutrients that it needs to function properly and heal!

Therefore, you need to be plentiful and abundant in the amount of juice that you are consuming! I recommend drinking at least five to six 16 ounce servings of juice in one day :). That being said, if you feel you need more, drink more! A good idea is to drink one juice every two to three hours that you are awake.

In addition to the juice, you will need to be drinking tons of water as well! A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your weight in ounces of water each day, and you can even drink some raw coconut water as well in order to replenish essential electrolytes and vitamins.

At the end of each day, I also recommend drinking some herbal tea (any kind!). The antioxidants in the tea will further help to detoxify the body and pick up free radicals floating around in your system.

 

How Do I Make Juice?

Let’s start this topic with what exactly a juice is. Juicing involves a process whereby you extract the water, vitamins, and minerals from raw fruits or vegetables, leaving the insoluble fiber behind. To do this, you will need a juicer! I really recommend getting a Breville juicer and investing in a good juicer that you know will last as opposed to just buying a cheap one. You will end up extracting more juice from the fruits and vegetables with a good juicer, therefore saving money in the long run! Think of this as an investment in your health, and you can use it to incorporate juices into your daily diet!

I really recommend making your own juices for a juice cleanse and juicing in general, as opposed to buying a pre-made juice cleanse or buying juices from a store. This is because most of the phytonutrients and other vitamins that are loaded into the juice are only available for use by the body for 24-48 hours! Thus it is best to make fresh juice early in the day or the night before and drink your fresh juices throughout the day :).

 

Benefits of Juicing?

So what exactly are the benefits of juicing? Well, I can tell you there are so many!!! I will stick to 5 main points to cover in this post!

  1. Abundance of nutrients without trying. Because you are taking out the insoluble fiber, you can pack in so many more nutrients in a juice than you could just eating whole fruits and vegetables. It’s common sense! Each 16 ounce juice you make will have the equivalent of about 2-5 pounds of raw fruit and vegetable nutrition!
  2.  More nutrients can be absorbed. This benefit also ties into the fact that the insoluble fiber is extracted out. Since your body does not have to digest this bulky fiber (which is still good for you don’t get me wrong!), there is less chance for nutrients to be trapped inside of this fiber while moving through the digestive tract!
  3. Helps to lower cholesterol. A vegan diet in general will lower cholesterol, but juicing is a part of that! Since juice has no saturated fat, cholesterol, or added sugars, you will be doing your body a huge favor!
  4. Better Skin. With all of the nutrients that are being consumed through a juice, you will begin to glow from the inside out! Juices that specifically help with skin are ones that are rich in vitamin A and C such as carrots, oranges, and mangoes!
  5. Improved athletic performance. All of the phytonutrients will help so much with recovery time and performance. Because you are fueling your body down to the microscopic level, you will reap in the benefits! In addition, beets are a great thing to juice if you are looking to improve endurance. Studies have shown that beetroot juice greatly improves oxygen levels and blood circulation, therefore greatly improving endurance levels. So drink up!

 

My 3 Day Juice Cleanse Experience

DAY ONE: I woke up on day one feeling excited and motivated to begin healing my body. Prior to my cleanse I was eating mostly raw in order to minimize the detox symptoms. Up until about one o’clock I felt fantastic. I was getting steady energy from the juices I was drinking, and I felt AMAZING. However, then I went to work from 1:30 to 7:30, and being surrounded by food and smoothies made it really hard not to become hungry… but I pushed through and continued to drink my juices. That night I got really good sleep, and I was proud of myself for getting through the first day of my cleanse.

DAY TWO: Day two I rode the struggle bus. I woke up feeling tired, groggy, unenergetic, and felt a headache forming. I knew that my body had started to detox. This was good in a sense because it meant my body was cleansing itself, but the effects honestly sucked. I continued to drink tons and tons of water in addition to my juices in order to flush out the toxins. In the middle of the day I was so physically uncomfortable that I took a nap for about 3 hours (which I never do!). I didn’t feel hungry on day two which was blissful, but I just felt so out of it. I went to bed early that night, and again I got tremendously sound sleep :).

DAY THREE: The final day! I woke up on day three feeling the best I had in a long time. I was filled with energy and mental clarity! I was excited to drink my last juices! I even went on a hike that day and explored the outdoors up in New York :). My body was feeling the benefits of all the nutrients I had been consuming and I felt on top of the world. I was excited to be able to eat food again and fill my stomach, and my mindset about food had drastically changed. I realized that I was eating it to get nutrients to my cells in my body and to fuel and treat my body as a temple.

 

Now that you have some information about what juicing is and my experience with a three day juice cleanse, you are ready to see the juice cleanse recipes that I have created. Each one of these juice cleanse recipes is designed to supply the body with loads of nutrients while detoxifying at the same time. I will order the juice cleanse recipes by which ones you should drink first and which ones you should drink last in the day. In between these juices, make sure to drink TONS of water, and get plenty of sleep. You can also drink some coconut water, lemon water, and herbal tea. P.S. It is important to keep your juices stored in glass airtight containers! For my juices, I always put them in 16 ounce mason jars, and make sure to keep them in the fridge when I am not drinking them! :). In addition, if the recipe does

not yield enough, simply

 

put a little more of something that the recipe calls for to finish the juice. For example, if you do not yield enough juice with my metabolic green juice recipe, just juice some more cucumber until you have made 16 ounces!

 

Grocery List for The Three Day Juice Cleanse:

This grocery list may seem like a lot, but if you purchase smart, you will not spend too much money. For everything here, I spent about $60. When compared

to a juice cleanse that you buy, this is minuscule!!!! Most cleanses that you will buy are about $60 a day (I’ve seen fresh juice cleanses sold for $120 a day!). And I also had some fruit and veggies left over after my cleanse which I used for cooking, eating, and more juicing! 🙂

  • 3 jalapenos
  • 6 limes
  • 3 lemons
  • 1 bag spinach
  • 9 leaves kale (about 1 bushel fresh kale)
  • 24 stalks celery (about 2 bags of celery)
  • 12 carrots (about a 2 pound bag)
  • 3 medium sized beets
  • 8 medium sized cucumbers
  • 14 medium sized green apples
  • 3 small red apples
  • 6 kiwi
  • 9 medium sized oranges
  • fresh ginger
  • mango nectar (I use Goya)
  • pineapple juice (I use Goya); for the mango and pineapple, unless you have a hydraulic press, it is difficult to juice these fruits, which is why I recommend buying the nectar and juice.
  • matcha powder
  • mint extract
  • herbal tea of choice

 

Juice Cleanse Recipes:

Metabolic Green Juice (Juice #1)

Use this juice first thing in the morning to give your metabolism a kick start!

Ingredients

  • 1 jalapeno (seeds removed)
  • 1 lime
  • 2 medium sized green apples
  • 6 inch piece of cucumber (about a whole medium sized cucumber)
  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 3 drops mint extract

Instructions

  1. Juice the jalapeno first, followed by the lime, green apples, and cucumber. 

  2. In your juice jar, put 1 tsp matcha powder and 3 drops of mint extract. 

  3. Pour juice into jar, and shake until combined.

Pure Green Energy (Juice #2)

Drink this juice second, and feel the long lasting sustaining energy you will receive from this beautiful green juice! 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1 leaf kale
  • 1 lime
  • 1 kiwi
  • 2 medium sized green apples
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 3 inch piece of cucumber (about half a medium sized cucumber)

Instructions

  1. Start by juicing the spinach, followed by the kale, lime, kiwi, green apples, celery, and cucumber. 

  2. Sip on this juice and feel the long lasting sustainable energy 🙂

Derma Glow (Juice #3)

This juice can be indulged as a mid-day snack, providing you with loads of vitamin A and vitamin C that will make your skin glow like an angel. 

Ingredients

  • 3 medium sized carrots
  • 3 medium sized oranges
  • mango nectar

Instructions

  1. Juice the carrots then the oranges. 

  2. Fill the remaining part of your jar with mango nectar.

  3. Shake well to combine, and enjoy!

Tropical Healing Green Juice (Juice #4)

This juice is juice number 4! It has a good mix of green leafy veggies, combined with some sweet tropical fruit to boost this juice's flavor. 

Ingredients

  • 1 leaf kale
  • 1 1/2 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 kiwi
  • 1/2 medium sized green apple
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 3 inch piece of cucumber (about half a medium sized cucumber)
  • pineapple juice

Instructions

  1. Juice the kale and ginger, followed by the kiwi, green apple, celery, and cucumber.  

  2. Top off the remaining part of your juice jar with pineapple juice. 

  3. Shake well and enjoy :).

Real V8 Juice (Juice #5)

Drink this juice last! It is loaded with nutrients from all sorts of vegetables, and will allow your body to fully replenish from the day. 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1 leaf kale
  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 medium sized beet
  • 1 medium sized carrot
  • 1 small lemon
  • 1 small red apple
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 3 inch piece of cucumber (about half a medium sized cucumber)

Instructions

  1. For this juice, start by juicing the spinach, kale, and ginger. Follow with the beet, carrot, lemon, apple, celery, and cucumber. 

  2. Shake well!

Pick Me Up Juice (Juice #6)

If you are feeling low in energy throughout the day, juice up this juice for sustainable energy! It is loaded with fruit sugars that will keep you energized and prevent you from crashing. 

Ingredients

  • 3-4 medium sized oranges
  • mango nectar
  • pineapple juice

Instructions

  1. Juice three or four medium sized oranges.

  2. Top the rest of your juice jar with mango nectar and pineapple juice. Yum!
