Let me first give you a little background into how I came across the recipe for the best vegan chocolate cake ever. When I was a little girl my grandma always made a chocolate cake for special occasions, and it was absolutely the BEST chocolate cake I had ever tasted. It trumped store brand cakes, specialty cakes, and all other chocolate cakes I ever had. When I changed to a vegan lifestyle, I was super upset because I thought I wouldn’t be able to taste my grandma’s cake ever again…
I asked my grandma for the recipe in order to possibly veganize it, and to my surprise it was already vegan!!! I had fell in love with a cake that was cruelty free to begin with. This made me so happy, and now I want to share this awesome recipe with you!
This cake is chocolatey but not too rich. It is dense but fluffy. It has the perfect amount of moisture to it. It is by far the best vegan chocolate cake you will ever taste, and you can take my word for it.
In addition to it tasting great, it is so easy to make and you probably have all of the ingredients sitting in your kitchen cabinet right now. The only ingredient that you may have to buy is some vegan butter for the icing, but you may even have that!
It can also be gluten free by simply using gluten free flour 🙂

The first thing to do is to mix the flour, baking soda, and salt together.
Then throw the rest of the cake ingredients into the bowl and mix with an electric or hand mixer until well combined!
Pour the batter into a 13 x 9 greased and floured pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
While the cake is cooling you can prepare the icing. To do this, first cream 1/2 cup of vegan butter. I used a stick version of earth balance’s vegan butter, but you can use any spread or butter you would like!
Then add in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, almond milk, and vanilla, and mix until combined!
Finally, spread the icing onto the cooled cake.

Best Vegan Chocolate Cake
Cake Batter Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup baking cocoa
- 2 tsp vinegar
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup vegan butter
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup baking cocoa
- 1/4 cup almond milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Cake Batter Instructions
In a large bowl or electric mixer, stir together flour, baking soda, and salt.
Add in granulated sugar, baking cocoa, vinegar, vegetable oil, and water. Beat until well combined.
Pour batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 inch pan.
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the middle of the cake.
Let cake cool completely.
In a large bowl or electric mixer, cream vegan butter.
Add in powdered sugar, baking cocoa, almond milk, and vanilla. Whip until combined and desired consistency is reached. If the icing is too watery add in more powdered sugar. If the icing is too thick add in more almond milk.
Spread icing on top of completely cooled cake and enjoy 🙂
